1935-1960s: Founding & Early Growth
The roots of fire and emergency medical services in Gretna date back to 1935, when the Gretna Volunteer Fire Department (GVFD) was officially established under Mayor G.H. Vaden's leadership following the installation of the town's first water lines. B.E. Coffee served as the department's first chief through 1947.
Early firefighting relied on bucket brigades and hand-pulled wagons. Progress accelerated with the purchase of GVFD's first motorized truck in 1948 and a new Ford pumper in 1951. Major incidents in the 1950s highlighted the need for improved training and equipment.
